Behind the Brand
Untouched World believe that although they are small in global terms, they can be large in impact. Their success simply encourages them to continue to challenge the status quo, to remember that they do have a voice, and know that anything is possible.
Untouched World finds it whole philosophy summarised in a symbol representing a Maori kite; the emblem of an ideal relationship between man and nature. The kite is the outcome of an art involving natural materials and human skills, it symbolises a soaring freedom of the spirit. Cultures the world over have deep and intimate relationships with kites.
According to many Maori tribal legends, kites in the shape of birds were used as an intermediary step between man and the gods. Specially made kites were used to prophesy the future and omens were read from the kite’s movement in the air currents.
Untouched World was established in 1998 and as an ethical lifestyle fashion brand to sit alongside Merinomink. Untouched World is the first and only lifestyle fashion company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations for sustainability. With their ethos it is clear to see why they are such a success. ‘to create beautiful, easy wear, easy care pieces you will enjoy for years to come. Pieces that not only make you feel good inside and out, but are also easy on the earth. Quality and sustainability are non-negotiables.’

Ecopossum™ yarn was first developed in 1992. Ecopossum™ is an exclusive blend of fine Merino wool, luxurious Brushtail possum fibre, silk and sometimes angora. This unique blend creates featherweight softness and outstanding wearing qualities. The yarn is unique in that it feels cashmere soft and is incredibly warm, yet it will not pill. These exceptional properties are due to Brushtail possum fibre having a hollow structure and no scales, thus using air as an insulator. All garments made from Ecopossum™ carry an assurance of quality from forest to finished garment, and a guarantee of essential fibre selection and processing controls.
Untouched World is the first and only lifestyle fashion company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations for sustainability. Every aspect of the life cycles is carefully considered, from sustainably grown fibres, to our GOTS certified organic dyes and water based prints. They also keep water use to a minimum and maximise recycling and waste recovery. Most importantly Untouched World has set up several trusts and organisations to help give back to our planet and people.
A percentage of every Untouched World™ purchase goes directly to the Untouched World™ Foundation (UWF). This foundation was established in 2000 and offers ground-breaking programmes for students across New Zealand, focused on leadership toward a sustainable future.
In May 2015, Untouched World™ was invited to Paris to assist in the setup of GAP, the UNESCO Global Action Program. UNESCO GAP identifies Untouched World™ as one of three global exemplars for empowering and mobilising youth. With this program, Untouched World has continued to build international partnerships and has led to an emerging partnership with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in New Delhi and the exchange of young leaders between India and New Zealand.
At Untouched World, every one person can make a difference and undoubtedly, this is what Peri Drysdale has achieved.
