Possum Fur
The hollow structure of the possum fur fibre creates a versatile garment that is warm, incredibly light in weight and comfortable in a full range of temperatures.
Research has shown that due to the hollow nature and exceptional thermal properties of the possum fibre, Possum Merino is 55% warmer than merino wool and 35% warmer than cashmere.
Ethical
The possum has no natural predators in New Zealand, and the abundant native bush (the possums’ main food supply) has caused them to grow far bigger, and breed more than double the amount that they do in their native Australia. The possum is known to feed directly on the eggs of many of our native and endangered bird species, such as the Kiwi and Kakapo, jeopardising their existence in the wild.
It is estimated that around 70 million possums are to be found in New Zealand, living anywhere from urban backyards to dense native forest.
Many efforts have been made to curb possum numbers in New Zealand, and the continued control of this population is crucial. The possum fur industry is one of many initiatives used to control an ever-increasing possum population.
Our environment is our inspiration. So every garment is a special piece of New Zealand, helping to save the natural environment that is the essence of New Zealand, through possum control. By purchasing Possum Merino garments you are helping to save New Zealand’s natural environment.
